“In December 1943 we went to the sports hall in the boys dormitory, which was packed. I found a sitting space at the feet of the piano. I had heard this particular piece in Prague three time already, but it hadn’t been as great as it was now. It is a miracle that the conductor Rafael Schechter managed to prepare such a wonderful thing in the ghetto. After the concert, on my way home, I had forgotten all the hardships concerning food, and hard work in the vegetable garden. I felt like a person dreaming beautiful dreams and waking up to see how everything is grey and common.” |
