Why was glass scattered over the ghetto walls?
Highlight the sentence in which Hanna explains why she did not realize that she was doing something dangerous?
[…] I went with my sister to watch the wall of the ghetto being built. German soldiers, armed with machine guns, were supervising the work of the Jews who had been building the wall of bricks. After completing the construction, broken glass was scattered on top of the wall. My friends in the ghetto showed me hidden ways to leave the ghetto. I learned how to pass through the buildings, from one floor to another, and come out on the other side. In time, I was the one who was sent to buy things, deliver notes out of the ghetto and bring in medicine. I didn’t realize it was dangerous. I was six years old. |
