In Kaunas Ghetto the Jewish residents organized schools for children. In 1942 the Germans prohibited the continuation of studies in the ghetto except for professional high schools qualifying youth for work. Despite that prohibition the Jews continued running elementary schools in secret.
This photo was taken in an undercover school which was established in a stable in Kaunas Ghetto. Only few children were able to study at school, because most of the children had to go to work.
Look and think: In your opinion, what do the girls in the photo think of their studies?
