“Zuzia” the doll

Yael Rosner was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1939. She and her family were deported to the ghetto with other residents of the city. Her mother was busy during the day smuggling children out of the ghetto to the Aryan side of the city in order to save their lives. So during the day Yael hid in a small cellar and waited for her mother to return at night. Yael’s mother brought her a doll to play with during the long hours while she was alone in the cellar.

One day Yael’s mother was injured at work and could not return to the ghetto. So she sent someone to bring her daughter to her, to the Aryan side. Yael was put in a coal sack and was ordered to lie quietly, but on the way she remembered she had forgotten her doll in the cellar.
