The Entire Family in One Room

Michael and Benjamin tell in their testimony about the deportation to the ghetto. The Jews moved from their homes to small apartments, and in most cases several families shared one apartment.

In your opinion, what did the children have to give up while being forced to move and live with all their family members in one room? Drag the words into the box.

“All the Jews were transferred to one section of the city of Czestochowa, where a fenced ghetto was established. We could not take a lot of things because father’s car was confiscated, and we had to carry the things ourselves. We left the furniture and took clothes and some kitchenware. From a five-room apartment we moved to a one-room apartment. We were happy because we lived alone and did not have to share an apartment with other families.”

“Vilnius Ghetto was extremely crowded. We got one tiny room of an apartment. We were four in that room. The room was located in a passage between the large oven which was standing in the apartment and another room. The Lazbent family, who was the owner of the apartment, lived in that room and was forced to share the apartment with other families. In the other room there was another family, and in the additional room – two doctors and their mothers. Our room was so crowded that my brother and I had do sleep on the table.”
